Battle of Heritage Village :
As Delivered From the CSA Mail Services
by Cpl. Doug Ruppel

Dear Mrs. Kohl,                                              July 21st, 1864

It is with great regret that I am to inform you that your husband, Major Keith Kohl,  has fallen this afternoon during battle while defending Heritage Village on July 20th.  Although we were outnumbered and outgunned, he inspired the men with his bravery and leadership all the while confusing the enemy with his tactics.  It pleases me to tell you that his efforts were heroic and he never wavered once during the short but fierce fight on that very hot July day.  While we were not able to carry the day, the Major's efforts delayed the invaders long enough for reinforcements to arrive.  The Yankees did not have time to prepare adequate defenses and with their supplies and numbers severely lessened due to the Major's efforts, the aggressors were compelled to withdraw back to their ships that brought them.  I can speak for all the men when we I say that his loss will be felt greatly during any future engagements.  Please accept our condolences.

Respectfully,
Corporal Doug Ruppel,
4th Fla, Co. G
